The story of one family's battle against an unusual adversary, related by an elderly Noble "Nobby" Jackson to a visitor. Set post Depression, on the Jackson's one acre farm, which was once 400 acres, and the best corn producing farm in the whle county. (To say nothing of Grandpa's moonshine).
Noble tells the story of his Grandpa, Jerimiah Jackson (or Jay-Jay as he was known), his motherMargaret (who would have been a singer if she hadn't married Noble's father - Joshua), their close neighbour the widow Maisie Matthews, a mysterious man named Peter, Noble himself and their battle with Kawcrus, the Giant white crow.
Kawcrus' eyes "are fiery red and his feathers, they shine like the first snowfall of winter, all clean and crisp".
